The History of the Tortilla

cropped-cropped-cropped-tortilla.jpgThe Jesus tortilla was discovered by my mom, Maria Rubio, on the morning of October 5, 1977, as she was preparing breakfast for my dad, Eduardo. A visit to the local priest a day later, led 11,000 to 33,000 people (give or take) flocking to Lake Arthur to meet with my mom and see first-hand, if in fact, the burns on the tortilla resembled that of Jesus Christ.*

For 37 years, people continue to talk about the tortilla, Hollywood has made millions off of movies based on my mother’s story and my mom is, at times, portrayed as the woman who set the standard on religious figures appearing on food. As her youngest, I grew up alongside the Jesus tortilla, and till this day, I’m still not sure what to think about it. What I do know is that it will forever define my life. For better or for worse.

*The Jesus tortilla no longer resembles the picture on your left, just in case you’re wondering.
